The Beginning

This is the starting point, The Preamble to the Constitution, the warm-up before the big game… well this is not as dramatic or poignant as all those, but this is your introduction to Work in Melody.

This lovely blog will take you on a journey through the business that is behind the music we love, exploring all the facets of work the artists, labels, venues, and fans put into creating an entertaining music show.

The whole journey will start this Sunday (February 10) with a live blog of the 50th Annual Grammy Awards from red carpet to closing credits. The live blog won’t be completely focused on the music business as it is more a chance to ask me questions that you might want me to answer over the course of this blog.

How does a start-up band get a gig at a venue? What kind of process goes into recording an album? Can I help out my favorite artists in any way? How much money is spent by a major label promoting an artist? Can artists go on strike like Hollywood writers forcing our favorite musicians to do goofy things like “these three idiots?”

Any curiosities you have about music, send them in and I will do my best to satisfy them. I’ll also throw out my own story ideas to see if they get the audience approval. I like to think of this blog as a new community so I only want to do stories that you guys/gals want to hear.
